The Artists

Five Islands

Artists: Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas

This artwork shares the Story of the Five Islands, an important cultural story from the Illawarra region.

It tells of Oola-boola-woo, the West Wind, and his five daughters — Mimosa, Wilga, Lilli Pilli, Clematis and Geera. After conflict and disobedience, four daughters were cast into the sea, becoming the islands that now sit off the coastline. Geera remained behind, eventually becoming part of the mountain range and now known as Mount Keira.

This story speaks to place, transformation and the deep cultural connection between land, sea and story.

Birthing Sites

Artist: Allison Day

This artwork represents sacred women’s birthing grounds - places of strength, care and cultural knowledge.

Each section reflects a different space within the birthing area, including places for preparation, birthing, rest and teaching. The flowing pathways woven throughout the painting symbolise the movement of women through these spaces, guided by Elders, supported by community and connected to Country.

These pathways represent not only physical journeys, but the passing on of cultural wisdom, resilience and continuity across generations.

Women’s Birthing Grounds

Artist: Allison Day

This artwork shows the areas of women’s birthing grounds - places where women gathered to support and care for one another through childbirth.

Each circular form represents a different space within the birthing grounds, including areas for preparation, birthing, rest and healing. The walking trails connecting these spaces symbolise the pathways travelled by women, aunties, sisters and grandmothers, reflecting the shared journey of care, support and cultural knowledge passed down through generations.
